Life as a Teenager in 2014 Essay

When I was younger, I always thought my parents knew everything and were never wrong. I believed that they never made mistakes, they were too old and wise. The same went for my teachers, older members of our extended family and just adults in general. I felt so safe, comforted by the fact that they knew and were in control, so I didn’t have to be. The older I became, the more I realized how faulty my ideas were. I never did become any wiser as I grew up; I had information and data that bombarded my brain and knowledge on how I must act to be socially accepted. I was told what I could do and what I mustn’t do. Perhaps I do know more about life and the world, but I don’t understand it; perhaps that is for the better. I remember when I first heard the song ‘Teenagers’ by My Chemical Romance, and I began to think about the meaning behind it. ‘They’re gonna clean up your looks†¨With all the lies in the books†¨To make a citizen out of you†¨Because they sleep with a gun†¨And keep an eye on you, son†¨So they can watch all the things you do Because the drugs never work†¨They’re gonna give you a smirk†¨Ã¢â‚¬â„¢Cause they’ve got methods of keeping you clean†¨They’re gonna rip up your heads†¨Your aspirations to shreds†¨Another cog in the murder machine They say that teenagers scare the living s*** out of me†¨They could care less as long as someone’ll bleed†¨So darken your clothes or strike a violent pose†¨Maybe they’ll leave you alone, but not me The boys and girls in the clique†¨The awful names that they stick†¨You’re never gonna fit in much, kid†¨But if you’re troubled and hurt†¨What you got under your shirt†¨We’ll make them pay for the things that they did’ The s ong did change my view on how teenagers are seen by society, but not in a way that I expected. I think that the singer, Gerard Way, is exploring how society wants to change teenagers to make them do as they are told and fit in and do well at school. However, the more they do this, the more teenagers rebel. In the chorus, Way expresses his fear of teenagers, of their tendency to perhaps be unpredictable and violent. ‘So darken your clothes or strike a violent pose Maybe they’ll leave you alone, but not me’ I  think he is trying to put forward the idea that society might ignore them or leave them alone if they act threatening and imposing, but as he is an adult, he is expected to stay in line and meet the expectations of society. I think it’s difficult being a teenager. People don’t seem to realize or might have even forgotten. I am at the age where I am too old to rely on others and make mistakes but not old enough to take control of my life and look after myself. This time in my life that makes up my teenage years is important, and I want to make the most of that but I find myself overwhelmed by set backs and a severe lack of control. There are so many aspects of my life the government wants to control. They want to cram so many exams and so much work into these few short years of our lives that we find ourselves snowed under it all. It seems that these years of our lives are the most important. They define us and decide what our future holds. The pressure is on: if you fail your science G.C.S.E then you won’t be able to take it for A level. If you can’t take it for A level, you won’t be able to study it at university, or get a PHD, or ever become a doctor. The government has decided that exams mean everything. An A and an A* could mean the difference between your dream job and being unhappy for the rest of your life, stuck with a boring job that perhaps pays decently, becoming miserable and dying a failure. It’s too much. This has to be the reason why we find that more and more teenagers each year are turning to drugs, self harm, eating disorders and depression. Why does everyone question the rise in the number of these cases? Is it not obvious? Iâ€℠¢m sure it also has something to with the rise of the internet and everything that we are being exposed to. Quite frankly, we can’t cope with it. It seems that no one understands but teenagers themselves. Of course, it’s all quite a cliche to say that no one understands teenagers, but it does seem to be true. I wouldn’t say that all teenagers can’t cope and I realize that some cope better than others, but I know that our system isn’t working. Not the corrupt government with its exams and heavy pressure on students, and the not the corrupted internet with its social networking sites and pornographic images that seem to be everywhere. The adverts that tell us what a perfect person looks like are crushing and I find them insulting. There is a silent reminder that lingers in the air telling us to be normal, a clone of everyone else and to fit in. Some people come to a point in their life when they decide that enough  is enough and they wear what they want and act how they like. I have a theory that people are like sling shots: the more they are pulled back and restrained, the further they go when they are let go. They get to a point where they cannot be pulled back any further. This is when people pierce and tattoo their bodies or wear socially unacceptable clothing to show the world that they are not going to be told what to do. There are also the quiet ones who starve themselves to be in control, take drugs to take away the pain or self harm to prove that the pain they are feeling is not just in their heads, its real and they can control it. There are even people who work themselves sick to be in control of their future. What I find interesting is that every generation is different: each has its own pressures that differ from the last. Not long ago, I would have been expected to get married not too soon from now and raise a family, possibly with a man I didn’t even love. Only recently has homosexuality become socially and legally acceptable. So before, teenagers would have had trouble fitting in, or would have had to pretend to be heterosexual. We as teenagers never really have been in control and with a personality like mine, that can be extremely overwhelming. It seems now we are finding our voice and are able to express ourselves. I can see that there are positive aspects about being a teenager in this day and age: some of us turn to positive hobbies to take our minds off the stress of exams. More and more teenagers are relying on their great passion in life and developing it to take their mind off their diffic ulties. This might be music, cooking, writing, designing, drawing or sport. I still remember the first time I played the drums and I’ve never looked back. They made me love music even more and I started playing the guitar as well. I wrote songs and started to sing. Music became my obsession and it is one aspect of my life that I can control. I can do it myself without having to listen to the people who tell me what I should be listening to, what I should be playing or what I should be writing. I do believe that if nothing is going to change, then we all need something to turn to in life that reminds us we can cope. I know that it wouldn’t work for everyone, but perhaps people who take drugs could start drawing or painting. Instead of people focussing on their body weight they could start to cook their own food and be in control of that instead. People who self harm could write down their feelings or express it through music, or even go out and run off  their sadness. I think people need to remind themselves what makes them happy and if nothing does then they should find something. I know nothing will change for some time, but in the meantime we need to find a way to make the most of our teenage years.

Ballroom Dance Essay

As what I have observed, Ballroom Dance is a famous kind of dance done usually with a partner and is being enjoyed socially and competitively all over the world. I can say that partners of these dances both enjoyed it being accompanied by different kinds of music and dances each of it as one. Because of the kind of performance in doing this dance, it is widely performed on stage, film, and television. Because of its popularity, several types of it, was created. The following types of ballroom dances are: Waltz, Jazz, Jive, Cha-Cha, Rumba, Tango, Foxtrot and Quick Step. The first one; Waltz is called to be one of the smoothest type of ballroom dance, for it should be danced gracefully and is characterized with â€Å"rise and fall† movements. The second one; Jazz is a type of ballroom dance which uses movements such as; Jazz Hands, Kicks, Leaps, Sideways Shuffling, Rolled Shoulders, and Turned Knees. The third one; Jive is type of ballroom dance which is usually danced in a lively form of Swing Dance and a variation of the Jitterbug, The fourth one; Cha-Cha is a type of ballroom dance usually danced with passion and energy and danced by partners in a synchronize form of movement in a perfect alignment. The fifth one; Rumba is the most romantic and sensual type of ballroom dance and often referred to as the â€Å"Grandfather of Latin dances. † The sixth one; Tango is said to be the most fascinating of all ballroom dances. The seventh one; Foxtrot is said to be the funniest and the simplest dance to be learned especially for beginners which is usually done with long, flowing movements across the floor. And the last one, Quick Step is said to be the quick version of the ballroom dance; Foxtrot and the most difficult type of ballroom dance which is comprised of extremely quick stepping, syncopated feet rhythms, and runs of quick steps. As what I’ve watch, the performer number forty (40) is dominant to the dance. They perform well and they made me impressed in the way they dance. They are a perfect partner because both of them really love what they are doing. When I saw them performing especially when they are in front of us, my eyes didn’t take away from them even if there’s other pair performing. There are two kinds of ballroom dance I loved the most, the Jive and the Quick Step. It makes me sway and dance with the beat. There’s also a kind of ballroom dance i loved, the Rumba and Samba which made me say â€Å"WOW! †. This dance is cool because they can express the viewers what they what to show in there dance steps. Those kinds ballroom dance made me encourage and go back to dancing. That was my first time that I watched that ballroom competition. It’s nice and awesome. All of the dancers are energetic and graceful. It’s obvious that all of the contestant in the ballroom competition are enjoying and having fun. It helps the ballroom dancers improve the way they dance. That competition is a good example of expressing ones talent in dancing. As a viewer, I think I can dance like them and I can be better than them. Just like the performers, I also love dancing but not the way they dance. Maybe I can be better them if I practiced that kind of ballroom dance and if I really love what I am dancing. If I would be given a chance to become a ballroom dancer, I would be seriously focused on dancing. I’ll keep my passion on it and practice the right posture of the ballroom dance so I can be a good dancer. I can prove everyone that I can be better than them.

The development of copyright law can actually be traced back to a time when there was no technology or mechanism by way of which it would be possible to replicate copies of written material. It was not possible to achieve any large scale infringement of copyrighted material as it is today from the comfort of our homes on the internet. Within British legal history, it is said that the King used the Royal Prerogative as far back as 1662 to pass the Licensing Act of 16623. The first real Copyright Protection Act, however, came as the "The Statute of Anne" giving the author copyright privileges for a fixed time period. On an international level, the Berne Convention in 1887 defined the scope of copyright protection and is still an important part of international intellectual property law.4 The advent of the photocopier followed subsequently by, home audio recording, video recording, and finally, the Personal Computer (PC) allowed digitized and rapid copying. The modern Copyright Infringer does not need a large factory of copying machines to create illegal copies of, copyrighted material.5 All in all the challenge for copyright holders has never been greater. The law provides legal remedies available to copyright owners to prevent others from copying the product and to protect original works involving some degree of skill, effort, and judgment. In England, The Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 gives protection to books, films, videos, plays, music, and drawings, all of which can make it onto the internet in some form or another.This law protects computer software as a form of literary work and even large databases form copyrighted material have been given protection under the Copyright and Rights in Databases Regulations 1997. Under the Rules, the copyright owner can apply for an injunction to prevent misuse of his copyrighted material and to order the infringer to return the infringed "intellectual property" and maybe a grant for damages. All this, however, looks very nice in the Statute books but the power of the internet to disrupt Copyright mechanisms has often been compared to a force which is always connected and is everywhere and anywhere all of the time.Very often copyright owners feel helpless in the face of technologically sophisticated infringements. For example in the famous case of Napster music files were created in MP3 format and Peer to Peer file sharing began. Pride and Prejudice Essay Pride and Prejudice is a nineteenth century novel written by Jane Austen. Pride and Prejudice is about a lady named Elizabeth Bennet, one of the five Bennet sisters who must marry a wealthy man, as she stumbles across the prideful Mr. Darcy. This novel is particularly interesting because it shows the overcoming of huge character flaws for love. The author, Austen, tries to stress the point about love always finding its way. Admittance of love and proposal, omitting initial prejudices, and two lovers falling in love and marriage proves the point of two people falling in love and overcoming prejudices towards those in different social classes. Omission of initial prejudices allows for people to interact more frequently leading to better relationships. Austen says, â€Å"Gave him to understand, that her sentiments had undergone so material a change since the period to which he alluded to† (354). Elizabeth, in this quote, is trying to tell Mr. Darcy that her mind has changed since his last proposal, essentially, overcoming her initial prejudice towards him and the people of his social class. Elizabeth truly loves Darcy, and that is why she has undergone such a change to prove it which also shows the supersession of her character flaw, prejudice. The novel encourages a sense of superiority over other characters† (Neckles). Christina Neckles acknowledges the fact that Mr. Darcy feels a sense of superiority over Elizabeth because of her social class. This quote relates back to the theme because as he lets go of this feeling and prejudice it enables him to truly and willingly love Elizabeth fully and vice versa for Elizabeth, she feels superior in a knowledgeable sense. â€Å"Darcys pride, which causes him to reject Elizabeth and her family, and Elizabeths resulting prejudice, which is reinforced by Wickhams false story about Darcy. (Zimmerman) This quote from Zimmerman reinforces the idea that it is Darcy’s pride and Elizabeth’s prejudiced that leads them away from each other and yet brings them together. Their relationship was tarnished because of these flaws but with the omitting of their problems it allowed to realize the loved each other. Because of Elizabeth’s strong sense of love towards Mr. Darcy, she was able to overcome her initial prejudice towards him. Admittance of love and proposal towards a person stresses the theme of love finding its way. Mr.  Darcy states, â€Å"In vain have I struggle. It will not do. My feelings will not be represses. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you. †(188) Mr. Darcy is trying to tell Elizabeth that he does not want to love her but unfortunately, he cannot do anything about and he is truly in love with her. By Mr. Darcy proposing and saying this, it shows how Austen is trying to portray the fact that his love for Elizabeth, overcomes the fact that she is in a lower social class. â€Å"Darcy’s letter is not persuaded to change her opinion† (Soni). Mr.  Darcy’s letter of his admittance of love was a huge swallowing of pride towards Elizabeth, and this quote shows how Elizabeth still upholds her pride. Although the letter towards Elizabeth temporarily leaves her confused about Mr. Darcy, this is the turning point and crisis in the book where love starts to find its way. â€Å"Elizabeths attachment to Darcy results from the clarification of her vision, not from the modification of her values; consequently, the view that the novel suggests a blending of two contrasting value systems, two extremes searching for a middle† (Zimmerman). This quotes says that since Darcy’s extreme pride and Elizabeth’s extreme prejudice, they found love and a common place in the middle of their matters. Their love and admittance of love is found because they despise each other so much that they meet in the middle. Through Mr. Darcy’s proposal, and letter, it proves that his love for Elizabeth is strong enough to overthrow his pride and also his prejudice towards her, and her social class. People, falling in love and getting married even further proves the theme of love finding its way. Elizabeth says, â€Å"Gave him to understand, that her sentiments had undergone so material a change since the period to which he alluded to† (354). Elizabeth says here that she accepts Mr. Darcy’s proposal and she would like to marry him. Mr. Darcy overcame his pride and proposed to Elizabeth, and she overcame her prejudice of Darcy and said yes. â€Å" But when Elizabeth decides to marry Darcy, there is finality to her Judgment. (Soni) This quote is showing how her judgment of Darcy has come to an end, the matter of social class difference no longer is of concern to the two lovers. This quote also proves that love always finds its way regardless of personal pride and social classes. â€Å"I always had a value for him. Were it for nothing but his love of you, I must always have esteemed him† (Morgan). This quote relates to the marriage and love Elizabeth has for Darcy which relates to love finding its way. She always had a â€Å"value† for him which shows she always cared but didn’t know how to show it. By the marriage of Darcy and Elizabeth, it supports the theme of love finding its way, regardless of social class and pride. Love between two people will always find its way, regardless of personal pride, and also regardless of the prejudices we bestow on the people of a different social class. Now, and even back then, the â€Å"class† we are put into is essential to who we associate ourselves with and who we marry as a result. Its Improving Home Energy Efficiency Construction Essay Introduction The typical home today has an unquenchable thirst for energy and there are many steps homeowners can take to help lower their demand for energy. The main source for todays energy is fossil fuels. The burning of these fossil fuels releases CO2 and CO2 is a major contributor to global warming. It is important that we take a more sustainable approach towards our energy usage. Sustainable energy usage benefits the environment and results in lower energy costs to the consumer. Building Shell The exterior surfaces of a building are called the building shell; this may include the roof, walls, doors, and windows. It is the effectiveness or ineffectiveness rather, of this shell that determines the level of energy demand a building will have. It is the heat exchange through the buildings shell that places the largest demands on energy consumption of the home. Lets take a minute to focus on the walls and structure with respects towards the building shell. A common trend in architecture today is to have many extrusions and intrusions in the walls of a home. This is more aesthetically pleasing to todays homeowner. However, these extrusions require extra framing which results in decreased insulation in corners and potential air leakage. Most single family residential homes are wood framed and any irregularities in the building shell are weak points when it comes to heat loss. Mobile homes are framed with metal studs, generally speaking. The increased metal presence combined with thinner walls and joints between modular sections all create potential weak spots that allow greater thermal conductivity. Multi-family housing units suffer from some of the same design flaws; much of their structural support comes from metal components, larger air handling units, and elevator shafts create weak points, thermally speaking. However from an energy usage point it is better to have an apartment that is surrounded by other apartments, the temperature change from one side of your wall/ceiling will be almost zero, this equates to lower heating and cooling costs. Later I will discuss air leakage and insulation more in-depth, for now just knows that when it comes to the exterior design of a building, simpler is better. Air Leakage What represents 5-40% of building conditioning costs also known as energy consumption, air leakage does. Air leakage is the exchange of air from the exterior to interior, or vice versa, of a building. Air leakage control can increase comfort, reduce damage to intra-wall components, prevent pest infestation, and save energy. While ventilation is needed for the building and human health, the goal is to control that ventilation and have it happen when we deem it necessary. Ultimately this exchange in air is a result of pressure difference from the inside to outside of a structure. The pressure difference is caused by the density difference in warm and cold air. This concept is also known as the second law of thermodynamics that is that warm will always move to cooler areas (when unassisted) until equilibrium is met. Unchecked airflow will seek equilibrium inside and outside by the most direct path. Examples of this process at work during winter months would be warm air exiting the struc ture through leaks in the upper regions of the building and cool air entering through the lower regions, thus creating a cycle that seeks equilibrium. Residents can prevent/reduce air leakage by ensuring that the building shell is properly sealed, air tight. This task can be accomplished by using spray foam around window and door frames as well as checking that the weather-stripping is in proper condition, not worn out. Also, windows and doors must be latched in order to be air tight, it is not uncommon for a window to closed but not latched. Other building practices that should be avoided include duct work, electrical fixtures, and plumbing components being placed in exterior surfaces. This could cause air leakage as well as reduced insulation where these components are present. Insulation Insulation prevents heat transmission through the building shell. In some winter months heat transmission poses a greater threat than air leakage. Insulation is placed in voids/cavities in the building structure to reduce heat transmission. Insulation accomplishes this goal by two means. It forces heat to transfer in the form of a gas, gasses are naturally poor conductors. Second its presence reduces heat convection and radiation. Insulation comes in many forms; it could be foam, fiberglass, wool, cellulose (shredded newspapers), and even straw bales in some construction. Every type of insulation has its own pros and cons. Foam is by far the most effective, it has very high R-values and if sprayed will expand to fill air leaks, on the down side it can be expensive, is not very fire resistant, and does not break down quickly in a land fill (eventually this is where it will end up). Fiber glass is probably the most prevalent form of insulation; it has good R-values, but until the wall is sealed can release particles into the air that are harmful if consumed. Wool/cotton is probably a more sustainable way to insulate a structure, generally it is made out of recycled jeans, can achieve comparable R-values, but due to its unpopularity can be significantly more expensive than more common insulations. Cellulose ranks about the same as wool, it is recycled content, but is blown in place and often will settle over time; this leaves a small section of the cavity insulated once it settles. Straw-bale insulation is a controversial issue, its density makes it a good insulator, and however there is much debate about how long it will last. Each insulation is designated a specific R-value and is labeled as such. The R-value is a measure of how well the material resists heat transmission. The important thing to know about R-values is the higher the better, less heat transfer equals less energy consumption. The inverse of the R-value is the U-value. U-values are used to rate win dows and doors for their efficiency. Windows Doors Windows and doors are the complete opposite of insulation. So much so, that we do not rate them by their ability to resist thermal conductivity, but by their ability to conduct thermal heat transfer. The way we identify windows and doors also known as fenestration is with a U-value. The National Fenestration Rating Council is the private/public group tasked with testing and assigning a U rating to fenestrations. Windows are made up of four basic parts; the glass, sash, frame, and the rough opening, all of these contribute to a windows inefficiency regarding energy. Windows can have several different types of glass including; Low-e, tinted bronze, reflective bronze, and clear glass. The best option for energy savings is to install an insulated, Low-e window. The insulative property is provided by a gas, usually co2 and argon. The gas is injected between the window panes and sealed in place; the use of a gas reduces the rate of convection between panes. The low-e is a coating placed on one pane of glass, usually inside the window, that reflects radiation. This coating is installed on the interior pane for cooler climates and on the exterior pane for warmer climates. The sash/frame is typically made of similar material, being; plastic, metal, or wood. With relation to energy consumption the plastic construction is the way to go. When made of plastic the sash/frame is extruded through a mold and often can be filled with foam insulation. The rough opening refers to the space between the window frame and the structural frame of the opening in the rough framing (the actual opening in the wall). The rough opening is often larger than the frame of the window to allow the builder to make adjustments during installation. Once installed, this space should be filled with insulation; the best to use for this situation is minimal expanding foam spray. Door construction is very similar. Doors can have glazing/fenestration within the door. They too, are given a U-value. When di scussing the U-value of doors/windows the most important for a consumer to know is that the lower the U-value, the better. Lower U-values result in greater energy savings when heating and cooling a building. Heating In North America the heating demands of our homes require a huge amount of energy. This energy comes from mostly from fossil fuels that have been refined, mined, and converted to meet our needs. The residential heating fuels that are used today can be broken down into four major categories; natural gas 53%, electricity 29%, oil 9%, and other types make up the remaining 9%. Huge natural gas reserves have been found in North America and it is considered to be the most environmentally friendly of the fossil fuels. It is the increased availability and societies concern for the environment that has led to exponential growth most recently in the natural gas industry. Electricity is considered to be 100% efficient once harvested. It is the methods by which we harvest electricity that cause environmental damage. The most environmentally degrading method of harvesting electricity is by coal power plants; however more sustainable methods such as harnessing wind and solar power production are b eing developed and implemented. Some electrical providers allow their customers to select the source/means of their power. Oil, once a major source of energy used to heat our homes is becoming quickly outdated as consumers become aware of more efficient and environmentally friendly ways to heat their homes. The other category refers to heat sources such as wood and coal, aside from the environmental impacts these sources are unpopular because they require more work by the consumer. A heating system should be designed to provide the home with heat at approximately the same rate that it is being lost in worst case scenarios. Each fuel type has a distribution system. These systems are given an efficiency rating. This rating measures how well the system operates and can be expressed as; Efficiency = Output Input. The resultant will be a percentage ranging from 35-95% efficient. The efficiency of a system is directly proportionate to the amount of fuel the system consumes. Therefore, the more efficient a system is, the less energy it will consume. High efficiency systems are considered to be any system with an 80-97% efficiency rating. Cooling Second to heating demands are the cooling demands, generally speaking, of a building. There are passive and active methods of cooling a structure. Depending on the designers knowledge and foresight of these methods energy required to cool the structure could vary greatly. Passive methods require no mechanical operations; the result is zero energy consumption. Active methods require the assistance of mechanical operations, although the level of energy consumption is defendant upon the system that is installed. Often it is a combination of these methods that provides the most comfort to the inhabitants of the home. One common passive method of cooling a structure is through the use of landscaping. The use of trees to shade a home is the most cost effective method of cooling. The trees must be deciduous so that they allow the sun to warm the building during winter months. Another passive method is ventilation through windows and other openings. A proper building design can create a chim ney affect, pulling cooler air in at lower portions of the home and releasing warm air in upper portions of the home. Often this chimney affect can be assisted by proper placement of ceiling fans, an example of a combination of passive and active systems. The use of fans to ventilate a home is the most energy efficient way to cool the building. Moving air is more comfortable to the inhabitants and can give the perception of a 4-8 degree temperature change. Window/Room air conditioners are the least energy efficient. The constant start up and shut down process consumes large amounts of energy. They are subject to significant accumulations of dirt, unchecked over time, this causes greater inefficiency and eventual failure of the unit. The use of central air conditioning is another active method to cool a residence. Central air conditioning can provide the most comfort; higher efficiency models reduce energy consumption. Central air conditioning systems are run by a thermostat and slow ly cool a building. This prevents the constant start up and shut down process that occurs with a window unit. Regardless of the system and methods used to cool a building the inhabitants have control over how much energy is used. The warmer the environment the residents can willingly tolerate the less energy will be consumed to cool the structure. Due to the fact that most people do are not present during the construction and design process of their home perhaps the most applicable way to save energy is to perform regular maintenance and select the proper lighting and appliances. Lighting Lighting has a huge effect on a homes energy consumption. There are many different light fixtures and bulbs a one could install in a home. Just as anything else thus far they vary in efficiency. The consumer must read labels to ensure they are actually purchasing the most sustainable, energy efficient light. Often more lighting than what is required is used, different activities require different levels of illumination, be sure to size fixtures adequately. Consumers must monitor their energy use by controlling when lights are on or off. If an area is not being utilized for a period of time the lights should be turned off to conserve energy. Also, residents should clean the globes or covers around the light bulbs, clean fixtures provide more optimal lighting. When purchasing new appliances consumers should purchase energy star rated appliances. Energy Star guidelines are set by the EPA and provide the consumer with a means of determining the efficiency of appliances such as dish washe rs, TVs, clothes washers, and dryers. To help with the cost of these more efficient options some state governments offer a tax rebate to those who purchase high efficiency appliances. Conclusion In conclusion, even with the unquenchable thirst for energy, the consumer has more power than they realize to reduce the energy consumption of the buildings they reside in. With reference to the buildings shell basic is better; irregularities tend to be thermal weak spots. Air leakage can happen anywhere the building shell is penetrated, stopping the unregulated air flow through a buildings shell will result in increased energy savings. The proper insulation is key, to providing comfort and energy efficiency. Windows and doors also known as fenestration create weak points in a buildings shell and must be sealed and properly installed to promote energy efficiency. Heating systems are produced by a wide variety of manufactures, it is crucial that the consumer is well informed with the potential energy consumption of the system before purchasing and installing. Cooling can be accomplished through passive and active means, often the most effective is a combination of both. Lighting fixtu res must be sized and installed properly to promote energy efficiency. Consumers should purchase high efficiency Energy Star appliances to conserve and reduce their homes energy consumption.

Ben Ross could not find a way to get his class interested into this time period, so he decided to try to make a group, He would play like a Hitler type scenario and his class would be the Jewish people. He would make this group open to the whole school. Ben Ross told his idea to his class. He announced the group, and he had a pretty good turnout. They called the group that wave and they made a handshake, and a symbol. Laurie a girl in Ben Ross's class joined the wave at first and was in it for a while, but she saw that it was becoming way too serious. She decided to drop out of the wave. The wave became so popular that almost all the school was in the group. Ben Ross started to dress in suits, instead of his usual jeans and a nice shirt. He started to dress like a dictator. Ben Ross had the kids in his group sit with very good posture, and if they wanted to talk they had to address him as sir and they Stood up and talked very crisp and clear. When they were through talking they had to sit back down the proper position. Ben Ross thought that his experiment was going really good. All the kids were really taking it serious and he was enjoying it too. The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union and the Creation of a Politicized Female Reform Culture In 1879, a group of evangelical churchwomen, all members of the Illinois Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), presented to their state legislature a massive petition asking that Illinois women be granted the right to vote. The architect of this ambitious petition campaign, which resulted in 180,000 signatures of support, was Frances Willard, then president of the Illinois WCTU. In using her position as a prominent WCTU leader to agitate for enfranchisement of women, Willard went against the express commands of the National WCTU and its president, Annie Wittenmeyer, who had made clear only one year earlier that the WCTU would not involve itself in any way with the suffrage movement. Willard’s efforts to build support for suffrage within the WCTU were only a part of a larger pattern of change. During the 1880s, WCTU members constructed a highly politicized women’s reform culture that supported both women’s enfranchisement and political partisanshi p. This essay looks at the first four years of this culture through some of the people and events that were most crucial to its growth. Founded in 1874, the late nineteenth century WCTU quickly became one of the most powerful reform organizations in the United States. The size and influence of the WCTU during this period was unprecedented; no other women’s reform organization had ever had its power and scope. The Work of David St. John David St. John writes of love in a pessimistic way in his collection of poems, The Red Leaves of Night. His writings suggest love is unattainable and his relationships with people (especially with females) are portrayed as negative. St. John creates a fallen man in his text, especially when his poems focus on his dilemmas with women. Psychoanalysis plays a large role in the writings of St. John being that he shows the effects of his downfall and the negativity the downfall incorporates. Lacanian psychoanalysis suggests our language is structured like our subconscious and full of desires. Lacanian analysis also shows that the  ¡Ã‚ §signs ¡Ã‚ ¨ in language are split between the signifier and the signified and the barrier between the two lead to unfulfilled desires. St. John ¡Ã‚ ¦s poetry is swarming with lines alluding to unfulfilled desires or a longing for things that simply cannot be obtained. St. John establishes the breaking of a psyche and through Lacanian analysis we can s ee that the desires expressed in his poetry will never be met. Through Lacanian analysis, we are able to see that St. John is seeking more, and wanting more substance out of relationships and his life that cannot be obtained. St. John is longing for a sense completeness yet his completion is something that can never happen. Lacan shows the human psyche in three parts, similar to that of Sigmund Freud. Lacan calls the three parts  ¡Ã‚ §Orders ¡Ã‚ ¨ and they consist of the Imaginary, the Symbolic, and the Real. The Imaginary is  ¡Ã‚ §the part of the psyche that contains our wishes, fantasies, and, most importantly, images ¡Ã‚ ¨ (Bressler 156). Lacan ¡Ã‚ ¦s major focus is in his theory that our psyche is lack and fragmentation.  ¡Ã‚ §We have longings for love, for physical pleasure ¡Kbut nothing can fulfill our desire to return to the Imaginary Order and be at one with our mother ¡Ã‚ ¨ (Bressler 158). Many of the poems in The Red Leaves of Night withhold the sense that St. John is yearning for something and is never complete. Dove – Brand Value

Question 1 Prior to the launch of â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty,† Dove focused mostly on the brand’s functional benefits in its advertising. Dove products were packaged simply, and the name â€Å"dove† implied purity, freshness and cleanliness. It was also very feminine. To customers, Dove was viewed not as soap, but as a moisturizer because of the brand’s constant emphasis on the one-quarter moisturizing cream added to its beauty bars. Because of this, women flocked to the brand in hopes of trading in their dry skin for soft, smooth skin.Exhibit 1 shows a brand association map for the Dove brand prior to the introduction of â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty. † As shown in the Exhibit, a lot of Dove’s associations are in the functional category or teetering between functional and emotional. This is because of the way Dove introduced itself – the brand was so determined to set itself apart from its competitors because of the moist urizing differences in products, but Dove became stuck in the functionality view point. It’s hard to create a story and brand personality for something which is only viewed as a functional product.Question 2 The main reason â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty† was created was so that Dove could become a Masterbrand. This meant that Dove had to expand its product line to include other personal care products besides in the beauty bar category. Dove tried to launch its new personal care products using techniques similar to those of the beauty bar, but to unify all of Dove’s products, the branding team had to create a new vision so that they could sell Dove as a brand rather than individual products.The key brand associations (taken from Exhibit #1) are healthy skin, beauty, and moisture. Dove wanted to introduce deodorants, hair care products, facial cleansers, body lotions and hair styling products. For each of these products, beauty is important. Every girl wants beautiful hair, beautiful skin and even beautiful underarms. Moisture is important for facial cleansers, body lotions and hair care products because you don’t want something that will dry out your skin or hair; however, moisturizers aren’t necessarily important in deodorants.Healthy skin only applies to facial cleansers, body lotions and deodorants, but not to hair care and styling products. As it stands here, Dove’s brand story is inconsistent for taking on multiple products of such different purposes. There is no one association that will incorporate all of the products Dove plans on introducing. Question 3 The brand story of Dove’s â€Å"Campaign for Real Beauty† can be broken down into the four elements of storytelling: message, plot, conflict and characters. The message behind the campaign is that all women should feel beautiful in their skin.The plot is to show women that by using Dove products, they can feel beautiful in their skin. The conf lict is that society tells consumers what beauty should look like, but the Dove brand refuses to conform to those supposed â€Å"norms. † The characters are women; women of every size, shape, color, age and height. These ideas are the backbone of â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty,† and are also Dove’s unique selling propositions. Overall, Dove’s brand story behind â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty† is strong. What makes it strong is that it’s never been done before.Consumers are so used to seeing the same faces, figures and ethnicities in advertising that when you show them something different, their interest in peaked. By putting women in the ads that look like anyone off the street, it becomes a brand that is for all people rather than only a certain kind of person. It’s also incredibly strong because the idea behind the campaign opens up conversations about self-esteem in general. The campaign generated a multitude of discussions on the internet about topics like anorexia, body image and race. Question 4The first of Dove’s advertising as a part of â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty† were its â€Å"Tick-Box† advertisements. These were very creative billboards designed to incorporate the opinions of the consumers about the product, but also about the campaign itself. The ads caught the attention of the public, and many people voted â€Å"oversized† at first, but â€Å"outstanding† quickly took over. Based on these results, it’s apparent that Dove had gained support in their campaign and message. The next series of Dove advertisements for the campaign are known as â€Å"Firming† advertisements.These ads featured six â€Å"real† women posing in plain white underwear. The imagery is simple, clean and pure – all aspects associated with the Dove brand and products. This ad is a great representation of the brand’s new vision. It featured women of all shapes, sizes and colors, smiling and baring their bodies comfortably. This is exactly the type of feeling â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty† was created to portray. The next step in the campaign was the creation of a video that didn’t even mention the selling product.The video featured young girls admitting things about themselves that they wished were different or didn’t like. The advertisement still remains controversial. This ad demonstrates the big picture behind â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty,† in that Dove wants to open up discussion about what it means to â€Å"beautiful† in today’s society. With the â€Å"True Colors† ad, the company doesn’t let the product get in the way, but rather lets the campaign take over the brand. This is most likely why the ad received so much praise, and ran during the 2006 Super Bowl in front of 90 million viewers.Stage four of the campaign was mostly unplanned. The â€Å"Evolutio n† video was created as a way to entice people to attend Dove-lead self-esteem workshops in Toronto, Canada. After the North America team saw the film, they decided to air it more publically on YouTube. In a matter of months, the film received over 3 million views. Using YouTube at the time was an extremely smart idea considering how popular the site was becoming. It opened the Dove brand up to the social media craze of the time, and created a dialog within the internet in the form of blogs, video responses and forums.The same can be said for the â€Å"Onslaught† film that Dove put up that thoroughly depicted what it can be like for women and young girls to walk down the street or watch television, and be bombarded with these images of what it means to be â€Å"beautiful. † Question 5 Billboards in Grand Central Station Dove’s â€Å"Campaign for Real Beauty† is described by Harousseau as â€Å"breaking every rule in the company. † Doveâ€℠¢s marketing objective for the campaign was to create a buzz and get people talking about the company itself and the message it is trying to portray.By using billboards in Grand Central Station, the company was taking advantage of the huge amount of foot traffic and diversity that the station offers. This technique in getting people’s attention obviously worked when Katie Couric spent 16 minutes on the Today Show talking about the ads and Dove’s new direction. Using the billboards in such a culturally mixed environment allows all sorts of potential consumers the opportunity to be introduced or reintroduced to the Dove brand and â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty. † Super Bowl Advertising Dove’s usage of the Super Bowl was all about exposure and introducing â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty.† The idea to advertise during the Super Bowl was at first rejected with good reason: the Super Bowl has always been a way to advertise beer, cars, chips and ot her â€Å"masculine† products; it wasn’t the place for Dove let alone a campaign set out specifically for women. However, the Super Bowl offers an audience of over 90 million people which would surely get Dove and the campaign some buzz. After its ad ran, Dove experienced continued exposure in conversations by news outlets, Oprah Winfrey and late night personalities. The ad was a huge success in making consumers aware of Dove’s mission.However, in exposing its brand and campaign, Dove opened itself up to ridicule and satire which is an unfortunate side-effect of advertising to an entire nation rather than your intended market. YouTube Release of â€Å"Evolution† Dove released the â€Å"Evolution† ad on YouTube using no paid media. Overtime, the word-of-mouth phenomenon went into effect, and the ad was among the most downloaded commercials on YouTube despite never appearing on television as paid advertising. However, the ad did make it into the medi a in the context of news programs, newspapers and radio.This advertising technique most appropriately demonstrates Dove’s new direction and mission. It shows people that what they perceive as beautiful isn’t actually real. Dove wants women to realize this, and love themselves naturally. The â€Å"Evolution† message is an important one for all consumers to understand. The Dove Two Dozen and Dove Real Beauty Award The Dove Two Dozen was a very behind the scenes media technique. It involved introducing the campaign to significant women in the media whom Dove believed shared its vision.Through this vehicle, the company hoped to gain the trust of influential consumers who would hopefully pass on their praise of the product and the campaign to everyday consumers who would also appreciate the brand’s efforts and goals. This is a good marketing technique because celebrities and well-known personalities have a lot of influence in the consumer market, so passing on â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty† idea to these individuals increased the likelihood of attracting the appropriate demographic. The â€Å"Dove Real Beauty Award† is a very clever way of introducing the campaign into the world of media and female empowerment.Dove created the award as a part of the American Women in Radio and Television’s annual gala. Although this offers minimal exposure since it is only an annual award, the influential characters that would attend this gala could possibly bring the brand and campaign to a larger audience. Global Self Esteem Fund This was the final step in Dove’s overall media planning process. The company created the fund to support uniquely ME! , which is an organization that partners with the Girl Scouts of the USA whose goals include building self-confidence in girls ages 8-17.This fund was mentioned on the Girl Scouts website, and linked to the campaign’s standalone website. Creating this fund helped garner exposure, but also added to Dove’s corporate social responsibility which is incredibly important in the overall view of the company and helped the campaign establish a monopoly on female self-confidence and self-esteem. The brand started out focusing on only the functional uses of its products, but the campaign transformed the brand to encompass an idea that was more powerful than mere functionality.The Dove brand remains pure and simple in its advertising, and still promotes its one-quarter moisturizer claim. But on top of that, Dove now stands for promoting self-esteem and self-confidence in young girls and women around the world. The brand also challenges the modern societal view of beauty which is monumental considering that no other company dares do it. Exhibit 2 shows a new brand association map that portrays the Dove brand after the launch of â€Å"T he Campaign for Real Beauty. † A few of the original associations have shifted and a few have been added: original, empowered, happy, extraordinary and confident.Most notably is the shift of the â€Å"beauty† association. Originally it was placed directly on the â€Å"Emotional† axis, and closer to the lower end. After the introduction of the campaign, beauty has shifted to the higher ends of both the â€Å"Emotional† and â€Å"Self-Expressive† axes. Another significant change is the addition of the â€Å"confident† association. Beforehand, Dove wasn’t known for instilling confidence in women, but after the introduction of the â€Å"Tick-Box† and â€Å"Firming† advertisements, that changed. It showed â€Å"real† women smiling happily, while baring their bodies despite them not matching societal expectations. Question 7: 1. Price PremiumAeker uses price premium as a measurement of loyalty. It represents of the extra amount of money that a customer is willing to pay for a brand compared to the generic option. Based on information provided in the case, there is no evidence to show how much financial growth â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty† has given the Dove brand. Although, in 2006, Dove was cited as one of the 10 brands with the greatest percentage gain in brand health since 2003. This acknowledgement is due to the fact that the brand had grown by $1. 2 billion in only three years. No one is sure how much of that growth can be credited to â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty. † 2.Satisfaction/Loyalty In brand equity, loyalty leads to satisfaction; this involves a customer’s experience with a product. Considering that Dove has been a well-known and well-loved brand for over 50 years, it can be easily deduced that there is a high level of loyalty behind the brand. Before â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty† concept, Dove focused on the functional benefits of its produc ts; mainly on the fact that Dove’s cleansing products contained one-quarter moisturizing cream. This differentiation between Dove and other cleansers is what made Dove the number one cleansing brand in 2007 and contributed to the brands largely female following.â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty,† although it started a lot of chatter about the brand, didn’t necessarily enforce more loyalty from new or existing customers. It would appear that Dove, while still using the campaign, is still focusing on its brand’s functional benefits to maintain loyalty. 3. Perceived Quality A products performance that varies from the object quality is the perceived quality. â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty† is an idea/message that Dove brand managers came up with in order to create a story on which they could sell their quickly increasing product line.The Dove products are still the same – they haven’t altered the ingredients of the products because o f the campaign. However, the quality of the brand itself has shifted. Because of the campaign’s focus on self-confidence and self-esteem in women and young girls, consumers began viewing Dove as a pioneer in the fight for societal acceptance of all. This view point is extremely important because the issue of body image in American culture is very prevalent, but companies refuse to address it in fear of being rejected by the masses for going against the â€Å"young, white, blonde and thin† norm.Because Dove decided to step out in protest of these so-called â€Å"norms,† the company runs the risk of being rejected. As Alicia Clegg stated: â€Å"Talk about real beauty all you want – once you’re the brand for fat girls, you’re toast. † 4. Leadership/Popularity The first series of Dove’s â€Å"Campaign for Real Beauty† ads came out to the public between 2002 and 2005. Since then, Dove has launched several ads following the me ssages inspired by â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty. † In 2007, Dove was â€Å"the world’s number-one â€Å"cleansing† brand in the health and beauty sector, with sales of over $2.5 billion a year in more than 80 countries. † This shows that 3-5 years after the introduction of â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty,† Dove remained the leader in its market. Also, since the campaign’s reveal, the brand grown by $1. 2 billion which can be mostly attributed to the brands product extensions, but also because of the campaign’s success. 5. Perceived Value The perceived value of Dove is the perceived brand utility relative to its costs. Dove is one of the more expensive â€Å"cleansing† brands in the market today, but it also offers more moisturizers which makes your skin softer and healthier.Since the perceived value focuses mainly on the functional uses of the product, â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty† does not affect the bran d’s perceived value. However, the campaign could increase or decrease a consumer’s individual perceived value if they support or reject the message that Dove is putting out with its campaign. 6. Brand Personality Dove’s brand personality links the brand’s emotional and self-expressive benefits to the consumer’s needs for social approval, personal expression or self-esteem. The idea of self-esteem is the whole basis of â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty.† After rigorous surveying and planning, the brand managers found out that only 2% of women worldwide consider themselves to be beautiful. Dove also found out that this is mostly because of the images women see every day in the media which depict women whose beauty is even unattainable to them (hello, Photoshop)! In response, Dove wanted to create its brand personality to encompass the idea of loving yourself in your own skin no matter your shape, size, color, etc. This new personality was emb raced by consumers and the media, most notably Katie Couric and Oprah Winfrey.7. Organizational Associations Organizational associations urge consumers to connect the organization’s employees, values and programs with the brand itself. This is very well done in Dove because of â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty. † Because the campaign is an idea, it offers many values out to customers that reflect what the Dove brand is all about. Because of the campaign, Dove, to the hope of the brand managers, will become a brand synonymous with â€Å"natural beauty† and â€Å"self-esteem† – extremely powerful words in the beauty market in America. 8. Brand AwarenessBrand awareness refers to how aware consumers are of Dove and its products. Because of the dramatic shift in brand personality and ground-breaking advertising series, Dove has created a lot of chatter. This is centered on â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty. † When the advertisements first surfa ced, they were so different and controversial that the media got involved and did news reports on the campaign. This was fantastic free advertising for Dove. Because news outlets and media personalities were discussing this campaign and the Dove brand itself, it got customers interested.Like a wildfire, word spread across the internet and people were creating blog posts, YouTube videos, updating their Facebook and Twitter accounts mostly in praise of the campaign. 9. Placing Dove products in places where any woman could find it increases the likelihood that the campaign will stick in the minds of target consumers and expand from there. Overall, â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty† is positively contributing to Dove’s brand equity. In a majority of Aaker’s markers, the campaign has clearly added a positive spin on the brands total equity. This is es pecially true in the brand’s personality.The campaign completely transformed the brand from one that merely focused on the functional benefits of the products to the feel and meaning of the brand as a whole. This is important because now that Dove has a large line of different products, creating a meaning behind the brand itself makes creating a story easier. Despite the existence of these mock advertisements and social messages, it doesn’t seem that the Dove brand or â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty† was hijacked by consumers.A brand hijacking is defined as â€Å"the consumer’s act of commandeering a brand from the marketing professionals by seizing control of its ideology, use and persona, and driving its evolution. † Based on what’s been accomplished by Dove and its campaign and the efforts of these consumer’s, saying the brand has been hijacked based on these few responses unrealistic. â€Å"Slob Evolution,† a consumer-created YouTube parody of Dove’s â€Å"Evolution† video features a normal looking man being transformed into a â€Å"slob† by make-up artists and the use of Photoshop. This specific video has a little over 1.5 million views on YouTube in the last six years. In contrast, the Dove video has almost 16 million views on YouTube in the same amount of time. Because so few people saw the consumer-created video as compared to the real video, I don’t think one could say that Dove lost control of the campaign’s initial meaning. In addition, majority of the comments in response to â€Å"Slob Evolution† don’t even mention the Dove brand or â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty. † The same could be said for â€Å"Dove vs. Axe,† a consumer-created response to Dove’s Onslaught film. There are only 5,500 views in the last three years.There hasn’t been enough exposure of these mock films to trigger a hijacking. One of the most powerful consumer-created videos is the â€Å"Onslaughter† video. It was created to get the message across that Dove allegedly uses palm oil from Indonesia that was planted after the destruction of lowland forests. While this is a powerful statement and potential problem for Dove, this advertisement doesn’t focus on â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty. † It does, however, present a problem because its name is very similar to the name of one of Dove’s real advertisements for the campaign.When the actual video’s name, â€Å"Onslaught,† is typed into Youtube, the consumer-created video is one of the first to come up. Again, this isn’t necessarily hijacking â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty,† but rather a small attack on Dove. Question 10 Based on the qualitative and quantitative success of â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty,† I think Dove should continue investing in the campaign. The brand has experienced phenomenal sales growth in the last five or so years, and has introduced several new products into the market through the campaign.Dove can continue to advertise using the values and messages from â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty,† and continue to open up dialogue about self-esteem and body image. There has been such a positive response to the campaign itself and already so much investment into programs and funds. As young girls grow up seeing Dove’s ads and messages, they will develop a loyalty and understanding of the brand. In addition, hopefully with Dove’s messages and influence, there can be radical change in the way girls view themselves.Since â€Å"real† women are the majority of women who buy Dove products, it’s important that Dove continue their focus on them. By reverting back to merely focusing on functional benefits, consumers could easily forget what Dove stood for in the past and simply change to another brand that may be cheaper and offer the same benefits. Dove must continually emphasize â€Å"The Campaign for Real Beauty† so people do not forget the social responsibility that Dove is trying to take on. In addition, no other brand or company is willing to take this similar risk, so Dove can continue to profit unopposed using this strategy.
